mi.Dia- The Cultural Innovators Network Symposium

2014, the Cultural Innovators Network, a project of the Goethe-Institut as part of the German-Arab Transformation Partnership, is planning five Cultural Innovation Days between the 10th and 16th of November in five cities: Algiers, Bagdad, Beirut, Thessaloniki and Berlin. The CIN Events all have a similar framing topic: “SHARING INNOVATION”.

On 15th of November, the Cultural Innovation Day Berlin 2014 will take place at ALEX Berlin. The day’s motto „mi.dia – A Cultural Innovators Network Symposium“ already hints at what this exciting day of international exchange and discussion has to offer. Caram Kapp, Cultural Innovator, ALEX producer and founder of Spring Lessons, brings people together to showcase projects of the Cultural Innovators Network as well as bringing the results of other transformation projects to the ALEX stage. „mi.dia“ will be hosted by Mihaela Gladovic and . The day’s talks will be presented in German and English.

The miːdia CIN symposium at ALEX Berlin is dedicated to exploring the ways that everyday media are used to communicate, spread news and create. We celebrate innovation in media, digital solidarity and take the opportunity to examine the roles we assign to communication, online and news media in aiding our interactions and thinking.

mi:dia is an open-studio day of participative exploration in the framework of the Cultural Innovators Network. At 2 pm, freelance photo journalist Philipp Breu will take us on a visual journey into the realms of capturing war zones and areas of conflict. We delve into privacy and data security and explore interconnected perceptives in the web documentary format with Mathilde Benignus and Frédéric Dubois from Netzdoku.org.

Kilian Krug from “Everyday Rebellion“ will speak on the challenges of developing and hosting an international crossmedia online protest platform. Marek Tuszynski and Fieke Jansen of the award-winning Tactical Tech will join us for a presentation of the fervently discussed virtual traces we leave online. Cities around the Mediterranean take the shape of sound in a retrospective of acoustic mapping by artists Julia Tieke and Berit Schuck

At 3:30, Amy Goodman, American journalist and winner of the Right Livelihood Award will hold a key note on hosting and producing „Democracy Now!“, a daily, independent, award-winning news program from New York airing on over 1,200 public television and radio stations worldwide. Daniel Fetzner, Professor for Design and Artistic Research at Hochschule Offenburg, presents the project dealing with political transformation through media „Crosscultural Media“, which was developed in the aftermath of the Arab spring.

We will end this first Cultural Innovation Day Berlin with a panel on participative journalism and freedom of press, in which Amy Goodman, Daniel Fetzner and others will take part with their opinions and voices.

We would like to invite you to take part in this day and participate in this investigation of the role of media in journalism, citizen media, innovative online formats and transnational collaborations.

Select parts of the afternoon discussions will be broadcast live on air and on line on Saturday, the 15th of November on ALEX TV, ALEX Radio and online at www.alex-berlin.de/tv. To attend, we kindly ask for your e-mail registration for CIN Day Berlin 2014 at mi.dia@alex-berlin.de.
